Top 10 Digital Video Recorders (DVR)

The Digital Video Recorder (DVR) is replacing VCRs for everyday Recording of Television Programs. The Digital Video Recorder (DVR) offers much more control about how and when you watch Television Shows. Take a look at my choices for the Top 10 in Digital Video Recorder (DVR).

1. TiVo HD DVR

The newest TiVo is a High Definition Digital Video Recorder for under $300. TiVo HD includes 2 CableCard slots for the capability of recording two digital cable channels at once or watching one show while recording another. Record 180 hours of Standard Definition TV or 20 Hours of High Definition TV on the 160GB Hard Drive. You must subscribe to a monthly TiVo service plan to use the TiVo HD, and it only works with Cable or over-the-air analog (NTSC) and digital (ATSC) broadcasts, not Satellite TV. 2. TiVo Series 3 HD Digital Video Recorder

The TiVo Series 3 HD DVR includes 300 hours of standard recording time or up to 32 hours in HD. Includes everything the TiVo HD has to offer, but is more costly. The TiVo Series 3 adds enhanced features like THX-certification, a large 250GB hard drive, front OLED display, and a backlit programmable remote.
 

3. TiVo Series2 Dual Tuner Digital Video Recorder ( DVR )

With 80/180 hour recording times and the ability to work with Cable or Satellite systems, TiVo still ranks as the top Set Top Digital Video Recorder, and now includes dual tuners for watching one program while recording another. You can pause Live TV and then fast-forward to skip commercials. While viewing Live TV, you're able to rewind in order to catch something that you missed, or you can watch the action in slow motion. 4. Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HD Digital Video Recorder

Scientific Atlanta, like Motorola, makes Digital Video Recorders for Cable Providers. The 8300 HD High Definition DVR is capable of recording High Def and Standard Definition broadcasts. The 160GB hard drive holds 90 hours of SD programming and 20 Hours of HD. Pause and rewind live TV, record two programs at once, and instant replay a live program. A great DVR available from many cable companies. Monthly fee required on top of regular cable bill.

5. Dish Network ViP722 DVR

Dish Network's newest DVR offers a Dual-Tuner Digital Video Recorder that doubles as a Satellite Receiver and High Definition DVR. Includes a large 350GB hard drive which can store up to 350 hours of standard-definition programming and up to 55 hours of high-definition programming. Dish Network offers their own TiVo-like service called "Dish Network DVR Service", which allows users to Pause, Rewind and Record Live TV. You can only get this box with a subscription to Dish Network Satellite service.

6. Hughes HR20-700 DIRECTV HD DVR

An excellent Digital Video Recorder that includes the ability to record 200 hours of Standard Definition (SD) or 50 hours of High Definition (HD) programming. Pause, Rewind and Record Live TV. With Dual TV Tuners you can record two shows at once or watch a previously recorded show while recording two others. The one drawback: you must subscribe to DirecTV Satellite service to use this Digital Video Recorder.

7. Motorola DCT6412 Digital Video Recorder for Cable Subscribers

The Motorola DCT6412 Digital Video Recorder is available from many Cable Providers for a small monthly charge. Includes 120GB hard drive and can record HD broadcasts. With dual TV tuners you can watch one show while recording another, record two shows at the same time, or watch a previously recorded show while recording another. Pause and rewind live TV and schedule recordings weeks in advance with the on-screen guide. Must be a Cable subscriber to use.

8. Philips DVDR3575H/37 Hard Disk/DVD Recorder

The Philips DVDR3575H/37 DVD Recorder is one of the few new DVD Recorders that includes an ATSC Tuner as well as a Built-in Hard Drive. The Philips recorder can tune Over-the-Air digital broadcasts, including HD broadcasts and record them to either DVD disc or the built-in 160GB hard drive. Those HD recordings can then be upscaled in full 1080p to a compatible 1080p HDTV. This DVD Recorder with Built-in Hard Drive can Pause Live TV, but does not have an Electronic Programming Guide and includes one tuner. Recordings must be programmed manually like a VCR, and only one show can be recorded at a time. The plus, no monthly fees for the Philips DVDR3575H/37 DVD Recorder.

9. Polaroid DRA-1601A Hard Disk/DVD Recorder

The Polaroid DRA-1601A DVD Recorder is the other new DVD Recorder that includes an ATSC Tuner as well as a Built-in Hard Drive. The Polaroid recorder can tune Over-the-Air digital broadcasts, including HD broadcasts and record them to either DVD disc or the built-in 160GB hard drive. Those HD recordings can then be upscaled in full 1080p to a compatible 1080p HDTV. As with the Philips machine above, this DVD Recorder with Built-in Hard Drive can Pause Live TV, but does not have an Electronic Programming Guide and includes one tuner. Recordings must be programmed manually like a VCR, and only one show can be recorded at a time. The Polaroid DRA-1601A also has no monthly fee.

10. Humax DRT800

Combination TiVo DVR/DVD recorder with easy hard drive to DVD recording. The Humax DRT800 offers all the great DVR functions of TiVo. You get an on-screen electronic programming guide (EPG) for antenna, satellite, or cable. You also get the ability to pause and rewind live TV, capture up to 80 hours of material, and play back one show while recording another. The Humax DRT800 is an excellent combination of TiVo and DVD-recorder functionality.
